John Peter Weldon, M.A., LL.L., C. Med.

John Peter Weldon is a Chartered Mediator, mediation instructor, and attorney, practicing in the province of Quebec. After a 15-year career in criminal and civil litigation, John Peter began a mediation practice in 1993. Trained in traditional mediation, he soon adopted the transformative approach set out in Bush and Folger’s The Promise of Mediation, first published in 1994.

After mediating over 750 cases of civil and family mediation, John Peter began specializing in workplace mediation after Quebec introduced legislation to counter bullying and harassment in 2004. In 2009, he launched Mediating Complaints of Workplace Bullying: A Transformative Approach, an intensive 3-day training for the Continuing Legal Education Service of the Quebec Bar. This seminar is offered in Montreal in French 3 times a year to lawyers and non-lawyers alike. Over 300 professionals in Quebec, as well as in Aix-en-Provence, have taken this training in groups limited to 12 participants in order to facilitate learning to practice mediation from a different perspective. The course can also be made available in English. An intimate portrait of this approach may be found here.

Since 1997, John Peter has also taught a 2-day training in Communication Styles in Mediation and in Negotiation through the Quebec Bar in French, as well as privately in the workplace, in either English or French. Over 1500 lawyers, mediators, and administrators have received training in groups limited to 12 participants to foster interactive, hands-on learning.

In 2012, John Peter was named Adjunct Professor of Mediation at the Hofstra University School of Law, Hempstead, Long Island, NY, where he co-taught the 40-hour intensive Transformative Mediation, Principles and Practice training with Professors Bush and Miller. A Certified Transformative Mediator™, John Peter has also received mediator accreditation from the Quebec Bar, COAMF, ADR Institute of Canada, l’Institut de mediation et d’arbitrage du Quebec (IMAQ), and the International Mediation Institute (IMI).

John Peter was an active member of the organizing committee of IMAQ’s 2011 and 2012 workplace mediation conferences. He also sat on the Participatory Justice Committee of the Quebec Bar for 7 years. In 2011, he launched the Reseau pour une approche transformative du conflit to provide ongoing support for French-speaking professionals trained in the transformative approach. During parliamentary hearings on the current major reform of the Civil Code of Procedure, the Quebec Minister of Justice expressed appreciation for the professional expertise provided by the Reseau on various aspects of the new law pertaining to mediation.
